Mando Gutierrez bio
Personal background
Mando "El Toro" Gutierrez is an American bantamweight who fights out of East Lansing, Michigan, born February 24, 1997. Raised in the suburbs of Chicago, he gravitated toward wrestling in his early middle-school years and grappled through middle and high school before relocating to Michigan "on a prayer" in search of a fresh start. He found a home at Murcielago MMA in the Lansing area, where his wrestling base evolved into one of the most active submission games on the regional bantamweight scene. Off the mat, Gutierrez is a working barber — a craft he taught himself as a kid — and he has described cutting hair as the grounding "yin and yang" to his fighting career. Standing 5'6", he is a compact, grappling-heavy 135-pounder who hunts finishes.
Path to the spotlight
Gutierrez turned professional in 2019 and announced himself immediately, opening his career with a run of first-round submissions on the Midwestern circuit for promotions such as Lights Out Championship and the Legacy Fighting Alliance. His grappling traveled, and in 2020 he submitted Jeff Jepsen with a first-round rear-naked choke at LFA 86. His first real test came that September against unbeaten prospect Mo Miller at LFA 90, where Gutierrez was caught in a second-round rear-naked choke — a setback in a battle of rising grapplers. He responded with more submission wins and earned a major opportunity.
Contender Series and The Ultimate Fighter
In September 2022, Gutierrez stepped onto Dana White's Contender Series against Raul Rosas Jr., the teenage phenom who would become the youngest fighter to sign with the UFC. Rosas controlled the grappling exchanges to take a decision, but the bout put Gutierrez on the national radar. He earned a coveted spot on The Ultimate Fighter Season 31 as part of Team Conor McGregor, where he became a fan favorite — famously offering teammates haircuts and giving McGregor himself a trim. Inside the TUF house he fell to Cody Gibson in an exhibition bout. After the show, Gutierrez returned to the cage and ran into another tough night, dropping a third-round jumping-knee stoppage to Cameron Smotherman at Fury Challenger Series 10 in November 2023.
Fighting style
Gutierrez is a submission-first grappler whose record is built on chokes. Six of his nine professional wins have come by submission — most of them rear-naked chokes — alongside two knockouts and a single decision, good for an 89 percent finish rate. His wrestling roots let him dictate where fights take place, and he excels at chaining takedowns into back control and the choke. The honest counterpoint is on the feet and in scrambles against elite competition: his losses have come by submission, decision and knockout, including stoppages against higher-level opposition, suggesting that as the level rises he can be tested both in the grappling exchanges and in the striking. Still, few regional 135-pounders finish at his rate.
Career highlights
- Elite finish rate — six of Gutierrez's nine wins are submissions, most by rear-naked choke, giving him an 89 percent finish rate among the most prolific on the regional bantamweight scene.
- The Ultimate Fighter cast member — competed on TUF Season 31 under Team Conor McGregor, becoming a fan favorite who even cut the coaches' hair.
- Contender Series experience — shared the cage with future UFC standout Raul Rosas Jr. on Dana White's Contender Series in 2022.
